Dev comes from Sanskrit deva, "god" or "shining one," a word that never fell out of use — it lives on in Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi and Nepali, and in the many names built on it: Devendra, Devdas, Devraj, Devanand. Used on its own it became a standard given name across northern and western India, and traveled with Indian families to Britain, East Africa, the Caribbean and the United States. A second road reaches the same three letters from the other direction: in English-speaking countries Dev also functions as the short form of Devin and Devon, names of Irish and English origin with no connection to Sanskrit. Both roads are real, and a boy named Dev may be standing at the end of either.
