A New York editor writing about the annexation of Texas used the phrase manifest destiny almost in passing, arguing that it was the nation's obvious fate to spread across the continent. The phrase was picked up immediately, repeated in Congress, and became the standard label for a policy of expansion that ran through the Mexican war, the treaty settlements and the dispossession of a great many people who were already there. It is a rare case of a writer coining a term that names a whole period of national history, and it is a reminder that a pleasant abstract word can be made to carry a great deal of freight.
