The story of Destry
The author was Frederick Faust, who wrote under nineteen pen names, produced something like thirty million words in a working life of about thirty years, and considered the westerns beneath him: he wanted to be remembered for poetry, which nobody reads. He wrote at a rate that supported a villa in Florence and a very large household. In nineteen forty-four, in his early fifties and with a bad heart, he talked his way into a war correspondent's posting and went into the line with American infantry in Italy, where he was killed by shell fragments. The character he invented is a deputy who refuses to carry a gun until the last reel, which was an unusual proposition for a western in nineteen thirty and is most of why the story keeps being remade.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The name was made for a character and has no meaning. Attempts to connect it to a French surname or to the word destrier, a warhorse, are guesses; the author left no account of how he arrived at it. That is the ordinary situation for names coined for fiction, and it is worth saying plainly rather than supplying an etymology the word never had.

Two syllables, stress on the first. The name has no silent letters and no ambiguity, which is unusual for a coinage and is presumably why it worked as a character name in the first place.

Fashion outlook
Destry sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, strong and completely unambiguous in speech and in spelling.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
- It has a documented origin down to the year and the author.
- There is no meaning to give, because the word was invented for a character.
- It is closely tied to one film and one decade.
- It reads as a surname to many people, which it never was.
