Desteny
Feminine · “what has been fixed in advance”
Destiny sounds like a word about the future, and its root is about fastening things down. The Latin destinare means to make firm, to fix in place, to settle — the same idea behind a destination, which is where you have decided to stop. The e in the middle of this spelling replaces a vowel that nobody says anyway.

The story of Desteny
English took a whole set of abstract nouns as women's names during the Reformation — Faith, Hope, Charity, Prudence — and then a second wave in the twentieth century added Destiny, Serenity, Trinity and Harmony. The second wave differs from the first in an interesting way: those older names were virtues, and these newer ones are mostly conditions or ideas. Destiny appeared in American records in the 1970s and rose sharply, and the respellings followed as they always do. The e in this version is doing nothing audible, since the middle vowel is reduced to almost nothing in speech.
Meaning
what has been fixed in advance
From the Latin destinare, to make firm or establish, through Old French destinee. The word's modern sense of fate developed later; the original image is of something pinned down and settled rather than of anything mystical.

Three syllables, stress on the first. The middle vowel is reduced to almost nothing in every American saying, which is exactly why it can be written e or i without anyone hearing a difference.

The Kayci test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Desteny's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kayci climbed just as high around 1990, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kayci's path sketches the road Desteny is walking now.
Desteny sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It sounds identical to a word every English speaker knows, so nothing has to be explained aloud.
- Desi works as a short form and is a standing name in its own right.
- The Latin root is documented and the original image — something pinned down — is a good deal more concrete than the modern word suggests.
- Destiny is the standard spelling and will be substituted on nearly everything.
- The change is silent, so the spelling has to be dictated every time.
- A word-name about fate puts a certain weight on a person, and a child will be asked about it more than once.
