One spun it, one measured it out, and the third cut it, and only the third one really mattered; the Romans took the same three over and the image of a cut thread has been the standard way of talking about the end of a life ever since. What is striking is that the gods were held to be subject to it too: even Zeus could not undo what had been allotted, only complain about it. That is a much harder idea than the modern word carries, and the softened version, in which destiny is something a person has and might fulfill, is a great deal more recent than the word is.
