Huguenot families left France in large numbers after their legal protections were revoked, and they scattered to the Netherlands, England, South Africa and the American colonies, bringing names that English-speaking clerks then reshaped by ear. One such family went west, and a son of it became governor of Kentucky; another son has an Arkansas county named after him, which is why Desha is on the map of the American south twice over. The first name is a different thing entirely. It appears in the American record in the second half of the last century, alongside a large family of names built on the same shape and the same ending, and nothing links it back to the governor or the county.
