Where it comes from

The story of Deserie

Two pieces of midcentury popular culture put the sound in American ears within a few years of each other. A film about Napoleon's first love — the merchant's daughter he was engaged to before Joséphine, who ended up a queen of Sweden — carried the French spelling into cinemas. Then a group of teenagers from Harlem recorded a slow doo-wop song titled with this spelling, and it became one of the records that defined the sound: a boy's voice over four parts, a title repeated until it was a chant. The name entered the American record in the same stretch of years, and this is the spelling the label used, which is very likely why it exists at all.

Meaning

Desired

The French original means desired or longed-for. None of the American respellings change the sense; they change only which letters carry it, and this one drops the accents that French uses to say the ending aloud.

Deserie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1975, with 38 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Deserie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, simple and easy to tell a child.
  • The spelling carries no accents or silent letters, so it survives American forms unchanged.
  • It is rare while sounding entirely familiar.
What to consider
  • Desiree, Desirae and Dezaray are all in circulation and hers will be written as one of them.
  • The ending is said two ways across the family of spellings, so she will be correcting people.
  • The French origin is invisible in this spelling and has to be explained.
