Where it comes from

The story of Desaree

The name belongs, in much of northern Europe, to a potato. Désirée is a red-skinned main crop variety bred in the Netherlands in the nineteen-sixties, and it is one of the most widely grown potatoes in Europe and Australia: firm, waxy, holding its shape when boiled, reliably heavy-cropping and relatively drought-tolerant. Potato varieties are named the way racehorses are, and the naming conventions are genuinely arbitrary — Maris Piper is named after a research institute, King Edward after a monarch, Pink Fir Apple after nothing in particular. A grower's catalog reads like a christening register. It is a useful reminder that a name in one country can be an everyday word in another, and that this cuts both ways: plenty of English names are ordinary nouns somewhere.

Meaning

desired; longed for

From the French past participle of a verb meaning to long for. The two accents in the standard spelling mark the participle ending and the vowel quality, and this version replaces both with letters chosen for how English reads them.

Fashion outlook

Desaree sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is written as it sounds, so it can be spelled from hearing.
  • Back stress gives a three-syllable name a firm landing.
  • Desi detaches cleanly and works for a child of either sex.
What to consider
  • Desiree and Desirae are both commoner and will be written for it.
  • The ending here is said differently from the French original, so the two are not interchangeable.
  • Removing the accents removes the French word, which French speakers will notice.
