Our story of Derrian
Vasco Núñez de Balboa arrived in the New World as a stowaway hiding in a barrel to escape his debts, talked his way into command of a settlement on the Isthmus of Darien, and in fifteen thirteen crossed it on foot with a small party and Indigenous guides and became the first European to see the Pacific from the Americas. He waded into it in armor and claimed the entire ocean and every shore touching it for Spain. Six years later he was arrested by the new governor, who was also his father-in-law, tried for treason on evidence that convinced almost nobody, and beheaded in the square at Acla with four of his officers. His head was displayed on a pole. The governor kept the office. The isthmus went on defeating everybody who tried to settle it for another two centuries.

No source is documented. It may respell Darian, itself of unsettled origin, or be built from a free front and a free ending. The Panamanian place name is a coincidence of spelling and there is no evidence any family meant it.

Fashion outlook
Derrian sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both cuts produce usable short forms and neither sounds like the other.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- The spelling is phonetic and can be written from hearing.
- Darian, Darien and Derian are all recorded and will be written for it.
- Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
- Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has no answer.
