The story of Derius
Darius was the name of Persian kings, and through Greek and Latin it became a European name as well. The French composer Darius Milhaud, one of the group called Les Six, taught for years at Mills College in California, and among his students was a young jazz pianist, Dave Brubeck, who admired him enough to name his son Darius. Derius spells the name with an e in the first syllable, as it is often said in English, and the record says nothing more about who chose it.
