Where it comes from

Our story of Dereon

The line was launched in the middle of the two thousands and named after the designer's grandmother, a seamstress in Louisiana who had made clothes for a living and whose married name it was; the point of the naming was explicitly to honor her. Within a couple of years the word was on billboards, labels and the sides of buses. Names get into circulation this way more often than the romantic account of naming allows: somebody hears a word constantly, likes the sound, and uses it, without any of the history attached. What makes this one unusual is that the whole chain is documented. A woman existed, her name went onto a company, the company put it into the language, and families took it from there, and every step of that can be dated.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The surname is Creole Louisianan and its own origin is not documented; it may be a French name reshaped or a local formation. Nothing about the name describes a person, and the route it took into the birth records runs through a clothing line rather than through a family, for almost everybody who now carries it.

Dereon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 238 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Dereon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The rhythm is easy and every sound in it is ordinary English.
  • Ron is a complete, plain name sitting in the back half.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
What to consider
  • The record carries it for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • The brand association is strong for anyone who was shopping in that decade.
  • There is no meaning to give a child, only a grandmother and a label.

Nobody names a baby alone.
