Our story of Deno
Richard Owen invented the word dinosaur in the eighteen-forties, and he did not mean it to sound frightening. He built it from two Greek words, and the first of them carried a sense closer to awe-inspiring or fearfully great than to terrible in the modern sense — he was describing animals whose size and construction astonished him, not monsters. The word was an argument as much as a label: he was claiming that several separately described fossil reptiles belonged together in one group, which was a genuinely new idea at the time and turned out to be broadly right. What he got wrong was almost everything about how they stood and moved, because he was working from fragments. The word survived the corrections, which is more than most nineteenth-century scientific coinages managed.

Italian produces short forms like this by cutting the front off a longer name rather than the back — Bernardino and Costantino both yield the same ending. But the American record also contains independent builds of the same shape, and a respelling of Dean is possible. Nothing chooses between them.
Pronouncing Deno
DEE-noh
Two syllables with the stress at the front. Italian speakers reading the same letters would say DEH-noh with a shorter first vowel, which is a noticeably different name.

Fashion outlook
Deno sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Four letters, no silent ones, and no realistic way to misspell it after hearing it.
- Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
- It is short enough to fit any field on any form.
- Dino is commoner and will be written for it constantly.
- The first vowel has two readings, so the name is said two ways.
- Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has no answer.
Nobody names a baby alone.
