Where it comes from

The story of Dennie

The Abbey of Saint-Denis, north of Paris, is where nearly every king of France is buried, from the Merovingians to Louis the Eighteenth, and it is where Gothic architecture was invented — the abbot Suger rebuilt the choir in the twelfth century with pointed arches and enormous windows and set the pattern for every cathedral that followed. Denis became the patron saint of France, his name went onto a large part of the French population, and Norman families carried it to England, where it settled as Dennis. Dennie is the familiar form, and it appears in American records from the very beginning of the count, given to girls as well as boys because it also serves as the everyday form of Denise.

Meaning

of Dionysus

The Greek Dionysios means belonging to the god Dionysus, and the Christian saints who carried it never shed the connection. The meaning is settled; what it meant to the men who bore it is another question.

Dennie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1952, with 22 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Dennie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables, six letters, and one obvious way to say it.
  • It works for a child and an adult alike, which not every familiar form does.
  • The name behind it has a documented history from Greek religion through French kingship to the present.
What to consider
  • It reads as a familiar form rather than a formal one, and some settings will ask for a longer name.
  • The spelling is recorded for girls as well as boys, because it also does duty for Denise.
  • It belongs to the late nineteenth century and reads that way.
