Deniece writes its ending the way English writes piece and niece and almost nothing else. That three-letter combination is rare and unmistakable, and putting it on a French name produces a spelling that looks English and French at the same time and belongs properly to neither.

Where it comes from

The story of Deniece

The saint at the head of the name is one of the great head-carriers. Denis was beheaded on the hill in Paris now called Montmartre, and the story says he picked his head up and walked several miles north preaching a sermon before lying down at the spot where the abbey was later built. There is a technical word for a saint depicted this way, and there are quite a number of them, mostly in France; art historians have written whole books about it. The oldest accounts do not include the walk, which was added a few centuries later, and once added it became the only thing anybody remembers about him.

Meaning

Of Dionysus

The French feminine of Denis, which is from the Greek god's name by way of a saint. The wine god's name is at the bottom of it, which the church did not seem to mind. Nothing in the American respelling changes any of that; it alters only which English words the ending resembles.

Deniece sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 38 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Deniece sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Final stress gives the name a definite finish and makes it carry when called.
  • The spoken name is completely familiar in English and French alike.
  • The ending removes the ambiguity about whether the s is voiced.
What to consider
  • Denise is the standard spelling and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
  • The ending spells an English word for a relative, which readers will notice.
  • It is strongly dated to the middle of the last century in American records.
