Where it comes from

The story of Demetruis

Demetrius of Thessaloniki was a Roman officer executed for his faith, and his basilica in that city became one of the great pilgrimage churches of the eastern Mediterranean. He is one of the saints called myrrh-streaming, from the scented oil that pilgrims collected at his tomb, and he is still the city's patron. The other Demetrius ran a library. Demetrius of Phalerum governed Athens for a Macedonian patron, was thrown out, went to Egypt and became the adviser who pressed Ptolemy to gather every book in the world into one building at Alexandria. Then he advised the king on which son should succeed him, chose wrong, and the son who did succeed sent him into internal exile in the countryside, where he died. The man who helped build the greatest library in the ancient world lost his position by giving the wrong opinion once.

Fashion outlook

Demetruis sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name behind it is ancient, well documented and carried by saints, kings and generals, so there is no shortage of history to point at.
  • Dee comes off the front as a short form and needs no explanation anywhere.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
What to consider
  • The last two letters are transposed from the standard spelling, so this version will be corrected by nearly everyone who types it.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
  • Four syllables is a lot to spell aloud, and the unusual ending means it will be spelled aloud often.
