The syllable at the back of this name is a real word in Welsh and in the older language of northern Britain, where it meant a pool or a lake, and it named places long before it named people. One of them is a Norfolk port that has changed its name twice over a dispute about who owned it. It was Bishop's Lynn for four centuries, because a bishop of Norwich had founded and held it; when Henry the Eighth broke with Rome and took the church's property, the town's charter was reissued and it became King's Lynn, which it still is. Local people mostly just say Lynn. The pool the name describes has long since been drained or silted; the word stayed, first on a town, then on a surname, and eventually on the end of names like this one, by which point it meant nothing at all.
