Delpha
Feminine · “from Delphi”
Delpha takes a French name and puts a Latin ending on it. Delphine is French through and through — the ending is the one that closes Josephine and Christine — and swapping it for a plain a moves the name into the company of Latin and Italian names it has no other connection to.

The story of Delpha
The heir to the French throne was called the Dolphin for five hundred years, and the reason is a piece of medieval property law. The counts of a mountainous province in the southeast used a dolphin as their emblem and eventually as a nickname; when the last of them sold his lands to the French crown in the fourteenth century, he attached a condition that the heir to the throne must hold that province and carry its title. So every French crown prince from then until the revolution was formally the Dauphin, and the province is still called the Dauphiné. A fish on a coat of arms became a job description.

The two readings are related at the root and lead in different directions. Which one a family had in mind is not recoverable, and the ending changed here affects neither.

Fashion outlook
Delpha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is shorter and plainer than the French form without losing the sound.
- The spelling causes no trouble and never needs repeating.
- It is genuinely rare with no competing modern associations.
- Delphine and Delphia both appear and the spelling gets queried.
- The origin is unsettled between two related but distinct readings.
- The generation that used it is now very old.
