Delos
Masculine · “Brought to light”
Delos is an island, and a small one: a few square miles of dry rock in the middle of the Cyclades, with no river and almost no soil. Greek writers treated it as the center of the world anyway. American parents of the nineteenth century, who took given names off the classical map with some freedom, gave it to their sons.

The story of Delos
Delos was sacred ground, and Athens enforced that status with an interest that was never purely religious: the treasury of the alliance against Persia sat on the island before it was moved to Athens. Later the place became something else entirely. Rome made it a free port in the second century before Christ and it turned into the largest slave market in the Mediterranean, where Strabo reports that ten thousand people could change hands in a single day, unloaded at the same harbor that landed the pilgrims. Two sackings ended it and nobody rebuilt. The Americans who named sons Delos were reaching for the temple and not the market. Classical place names were fashionable, and a whole generation of boys grew up as Delos, Alonzo, Orin and Milo without anyone finding it odd.

Brought to light, made visible
Greek delos is an ordinary adjective meaning clear, evident, plain to see, and ancient writers linked it to the island's own story, a floating rock fixed in place and made visible so that Leto could give birth on it. Whether the island was named from the adjective, or the adjective was attached afterwards to explain a name nobody could read any more, is not settled. Place names of that age routinely outlive the language that could explain them.

Pronouncing Delos
DEE-los
American families said DEE-los, with the stress on the first syllable and a full second vowel. The Greek is closer to DAY-loss. Either way the weight stays at the front, which is what keeps the name from sounding like a surname.

Fashion outlook
Delos sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, strong and entirely unambiguous to spell once heard, with no silent letters anywhere in it.
- It belongs to a real place with a documented history rather than to a naming fashion, which gives a child something to find out.
- Del is a ready-made everyday form for anyone who does not want to carry an island around.
- It reads as a surname to most American ears, and will be filed under the wrong column more than once.
- The name is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in the United States, so it will sound like a great-grandfather rather than a child.
- The island's later history is grim, and a child who looks it up will find the slave market as easily as the temple.
