Delorise
Feminine · “Sorrows”
Delorise looks like it begins with the American De- prefix, and it does not. The first syllable is a respelling of the flat unstressed vowel at the front of Dolores, and Dolores is a Spanish devotional word rather than a name in the ordinary sense. The accident is a neat one: a Spanish sorrow ends up wearing an American shape.

The story of Delorise
The sorrows were counted by an order of friars founded in Florence in the thirteenth century, who took the devotion as their own and fixed the number at seven, matching them to seven episodes in the gospels. It spread across Catholic Europe, acquired a feast day, and produced given names in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. In Spanish the name is usually shortened at the back, which is where Lola comes from. The American respellings work on the front instead: the first syllable of Dolores is unstressed and colorless, so it can be written with an o or an e without any change in sound, and once it is written with an e the name looks like a member of a completely different family, the one that includes Deshawn and Delmar. It is not related to any of them.
Meaning
Sorrows
Dolores is the plural of the Spanish word for a pain or a grief, and it is a shortening of a longer devotional phrase naming Mary under that heading. The plural matters, because the sorrows in question were counted. Nothing in the name refers to a child; it names a devotion, in the way that Concepcion, Asuncion and Mercedes do, and the whole class works differently from names that describe the person carrying them.

Fashion outlook
Delorise sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name has a real and specific history behind it, with a documented devotion and a documented order.
- Lola and Dee are two very different everyday forms, one continental and one plainly American.
- It is long enough to be formal and easily shortened when it needs not to be.
- The meaning is grief, and while nobody in the tradition intended it as a description of the child, people do ask.
- Dolores and Delores are both far commoner spellings, so this one will be corrected by strangers acting in good faith.
- The final syllable has two live pronunciations, and the written e invites the one most speakers do not use.
