Where it comes from

The story of Deloras

The image came long before the name. The mother of sorrows is a subject in European art — a woman alone, often with swords through her heart, one for each grief — and it was painted and carved for centuries before anybody thought of giving the title to a daughter. When the practice did start, it spread through the whole Spanish-speaking world. In America the name arrived twice: with Spanish-speaking families, and again through the movies, where one of the first Mexican actresses to become a star in Hollywood carried it and worked in two film industries at a time when very few people worked in either.

Meaning

Sorrows

The Spanish dolores is the plural of dolor, pain or grief, and the name comes from a title of the Virgin as the mother of sorrows. It is not a wish for the child; it is a devotion, which is a distinction that does not survive translation into English and matters a great deal in Spanish.

Fashion outlook

Deloras sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a name with real weight behind it rather than a pleasant sound alone.
  • The short forms are numerous and sound nothing like the full name.
  • It is understood immediately in Spanish-speaking company.
What to consider
  • Dolores is the standard spelling and hers will be written that way by anyone who knows the name.
  • The meaning is genuinely sorrowful, and she will be told so at some point.
  • The name belongs strongly to one American generation.
