Our story of Dellar
Della is the heroine of O. Henry's The Gift of the Magi, who sells her long hair to buy her husband a chain for his watch, while he sells the watch to buy her combs. Dellar adds a letter and comes close to dollar, and that word has a story of its own: the silver coins minted from a Bohemian mine in the valley of Saint Joachim were called Joachimsthalers, then thalers, and English made them dollars. A name that sounds like both a gift and a coin is not a bad thing to carry.
