Delight
Feminine · “delight”
Delight has a letter pair in the middle that has no business being there. The word was spelled delite for three hundred years, exactly as it sounds; the gh was added in the sixteenth century by printers who thought it ought to look like light and night, and it has been confusing English spellers ever since.

The story of Delight
The insertion is a documented act of tidying-up that made things worse. Sixteenth-century printers and schoolmasters had a taste for spellings that showed a word's supposed ancestry, and they applied it unevenly and often wrongly: they put a b in debt and doubt because of Latin words English had never used, an s in island for the same reason, and a gh in delight and sprightly by analogy with light and bright, which are Germanic and unrelated. None of the additions changed a single sound. All of them are still there, and children learn them one at a time.
Meaning
delight, the English word
The word came into English from Old French and before that from a Latin verb meaning to entice or to charm. Its relatives are easy to see once the gh is removed: delicious, delectable and dilettante all come from the same verb — a dilettante being, precisely, somebody who takes delight in an art without doing the work. The inserted letters connect it visually to a family of Germanic words it has nothing to do with, which is the whole trouble.

Fashion outlook
Delight sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a plain English word that everybody can read, say and spell.
- The meaning is unambiguous and warm, which few virtue names manage.
- It is genuinely unrepeated — nobody now gives it.
- A word name carries the whole word, and this one is a large claim to hang on a child.
- It reads as a Puritan-style virtue name and will place her in a particular tradition.
- It has been out of use for three generations, so there is no model for how it wears.
