Deette is a very early entry in the American record and an unusually opaque one: it may be a letter with an ending attached, a French-looking build, or a family's own invention. What it does have is a first syllable that names a letter, and that letter has quietly named a large part of the world's geography.

How old is the name Deette?

Deette first appears in US birth records in 1906 — 119 years ago. The typical Deette alive today was born around 1953, making them about 72 years old. About 500 people named Deette are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Deette most popular?

Where it comes from

Our story of Deette

The fourth letter of the Greek alphabet is written as a triangle, and it is the reason a river mouth is called a delta. Herodotus, describing Egypt, noticed that the land where the Nile splits and fans out into the sea is triangular, and used the letter's name for it; the usage was about that one place. It generalized slowly and then completely, so that every fan-shaped river mouth in the world is now a delta, including the ones that are not triangular at all. The letter itself came from a Phoenician sign for a door, which is why the Hebrew letter in the same position is still called the word for door. Mathematics later took the capital for a difference and the small letter for a very small one, so a single triangular sign now means a river mouth, a change in quantity and a doorway, depending on who is reading it.

No source is documented. Families of the period did register initials with endings attached, and they also built names to look French without any French behind them. Either account fits this one, and the registers hold nothing that separates them.

Pronouncing Deette

dee-ETT

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The doubled e at the front is read as a single long vowel, not as two, which is what keeps the name from being three syllables.

Deette sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1967, with 22 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Deette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Dee detaches at once and works for a child of any age.
  • Back stress gives a short name a firm landing.
  • It is genuinely rare and belongs to almost nobody now living.
What to consider
  • D'Ette, Deetta and Dette are all in the record and the spelling will need giving.
  • The doubled e invites a three-syllable reading that is not intended.
  • Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has no honest answer.
