Declan
Masculine
Declan is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 58,547 boys against 403 girls since 1880.
Declan comes from the Irish Deaglán, carried for centuries by the memory of Saint Declan of Ardmore on the Waterford coast, where his well and ruined oratory still draw pilgrims each July. For most of its life it was a local Irish name; only in the last few generations has it traveled the English-speaking world, helped along by footballers and a spelling that gives away its own pronunciation. Two firm syllables, stress on the front, and a ready-made short form in Dec.

The story of Declan
Declan is the English spelling of the Irish Deaglán, the name of Saint Declan of Ardmore, traditionally placed in the fifth century and remembered as an early bishop of the Déisi in what is now County Waterford. His cult remained intensely local — a holy well, a round tower, a pilgrim path along the sea — and so did the name, which for centuries was far more likely to be heard in Munster than anywhere else. The twentieth-century revival of interest in Irish names lifted it out of that corner and into general use across Ireland, then Britain, Australia and the United States. The English form arrived with the same shape it has now, and today it is worn by an England international footballer as comfortably as by a medieval saint.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Nobody has settled what Deaglán originally meant. Popular lists offer "full of goodness" or "man of prayer", but neither has real linguistic support behind it. What is documented is the name itself: Deaglán, borne by the bishop-saint of Ardmore in County Waterford, whose Latin Life calls him Declanus, and whose name stayed alive in that corner of Munster long after its sense was lost.

The Maurice test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Declan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maurice climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maurice's path sketches the road Declan is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds in English, so it survives phone calls and roll calls without correction.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled. If you want a name whose translation you can tell a child, Declan will give you a saint, a coastline and a long record instead.
- Its wave in the United States is very recent, so for now the name reads as belonging to children rather than to adults. That will even out as this cohort grows up.
- Dec will happen, whether or not you plan on it. Worth deciding in advance whether that is a bonus or a bother.
