Where it comes from

Our story of Dearl

Old English deore meant beloved, and it also meant costly, and English has never separated them. A British shopper still says that something is very dear when it is expensive, and the same person will begin a letter with Dear Sir, and neither use feels strange because both senses are about a thing being valued highly. American English has largely dropped the price sense and kept the affection, which is why the pairing sounds odd to American ears and completely ordinary in Britain. It is a good word to have at the front of a name: one syllable that has meant precious, in both senses, for as long as there has been an English language.

Meaningnot established

Not established

It has been read as Earl with a consonant in front, in the pattern that produced a great many American names, and as Darrell worn down. Neither has been shown. The record holds the name from early in the statistics and explains nothing.

Dearl sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1933, with 24 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dearl sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and five letters: short, memorable and quick to write.
  • It is genuinely rare without containing a sound that anybody finds difficult.
  • It has a documented place in the early American record rather than being a modern invention.
What to consider
  • It reads as a name of a much older generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
  • It will be heard as Earl, Darrell or Pearl by people catching it once.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
