Deann
Feminine · “favor”
Deann drops the e that Deanne keeps, and the two spellings have been living side by side for a lifetime. Both are Dee and Ann run together — the initial that became a name, and the shortest form of one of the oldest women's names in Europe. Ann arrived in English from Hebrew by way of Greek, and it is the half with the settled meaning.

Where it comes from
From Hannah to Deann
The story of Deann
Anna reached medieval Europe through the story of the Virgin's mother, who is not named in the canonical Gospels but is called Anna in a second-century text that the church took up anyway. From there she became one of the most-venerated saints in Europe and her name one of the most-used. Its very shortness then made it the perfect second half for an American compound: Mary Ann, Lee Ann, Jo Ann, Dee Ann. Closing the two words into one is the last step, and dropping the final e is the step after that.
Meaning
favor; grace
Hebrew Hannah means favor or grace, and Greek rendered it Anna, which is the form the New Testament uses and the form that spread across Europe. English produced Ann and Anne from it, and the two spellings have never sorted themselves out. That meaning is one of very few in naming that nobody disputes. The Dee half is a letter and carries nothing, so this compound has one meaning rather than two.

Fashion outlook
Deann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves are as familiar as English names get, so nothing needs explaining.
- Dee and Ann are both complete names and give the person two quite different registers.
- As one word it works as a single given name on any form, which a two-word double name does not always.
- Deanne, Deanna, DeAnn and Dee Ann are all in use, and the spelling gets dictated every time.
- It will be split back into two words by people and by databases alike.
- The compound structure dates the name to the middle of the last century about as precisely as a name can be dated.
