Almost everybody assumes Deane has something to do with a churchman, and almost nobody called Deane does. The commoner source is a valley: an ordinary English landscape word that named a family by where it lived, and then acquired a decorative final e from a clerk who thought names should have one.

The story of Deane
The final e is the part with a story of its own. English surnames were fixed on paper during the centuries when spelling was a clerk's decision rather than a rule, and clerks liked a name to end well: a silent e was added to Brown, Clark, Dean, Smith and Green with no more reason than that it looked finished. The families that ended up with the e kept it, the families that did not never got it, and the two versions have been separate surnames ever since although they are the same word. Deane crossed to the front of the name in America, where surnames became given names on a scale England never matched, and it has been given to daughters as well as sons for as long as it has been used at all.

Valley
Two sources, and the counts are lopsided. Old English denu, a valley, produced hundreds of place names and the surnames taken from them, and that is where most bearers come from. The church office is a genuine second source, but occupational surnames from senior clergy are rare, because the men holding those posts were not supposed to have sons. The safe reading is the valley; the churchman is the exception that everyone reaches for first.

DEEN
One syllable. The final e is silent and always has been; it was never intended to be pronounced, and it does not lengthen anything, because the vowel was already long.

Fashion outlook
Deane sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- One syllable, no ambiguity in the sound, and a meaning that can be given in a single word.
- It works for a child of either sex, since a surname carries no sex of its own.
- The plain spelling is available underneath if the extra letter ever becomes tiresome.
- The record carries this spelling for girls as well as boys, so it does not signal a child's sex.
- The silent e will be dropped by nearly everyone who writes the name from hearing it.
- It reads as a surname, and a single-syllable surname at the front of a name can sound like a nickname.
