Where it comes from

Our story of Dayquan

Quantum is simply the Latin for how much, a neuter form of the ordinary word for how great. Physicists took it in the early twentieth century for the smallest discrete amount of something, and because the physics that followed was strange, the word acquired an aura it did not have and does not deserve. It is now attached to a great deal of nonsense in advertising and self-help, on the assumption that it means mysterious. It means how much. The same root gives quantity, quantify and the legal term for damages. Plenty of physicists would be delighted if everybody went back to using it that way.

Dayquan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1994, with 66 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dayquan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Day and Quan are both available as short forms and both work on their own.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
  • The sounds are all thoroughly familiar to English speakers.
What to consider
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • Daquan, Dequan and Dayquon are all in the record and will be confused with it.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
