English has two ways of writing this vowel and Dayle uses the older one. Dale relies on the silent e at the end to reach back and lengthen the a. Dayle spells the sound out directly with a y and then keeps the e anyway, which means the name is carrying both systems at once and needs neither.

Where it comes from

The story of Dayle

The word has one very famous relative that nobody notices. German writes the same word as Tal, and a small valley near Düsseldorf was named in the seventeenth century after a hymn-writer who used to walk there. In the nineteenth century quarrymen working that valley found a skull, and the species named after the place is now the best-known extinct human relative there is. The Neander valley is, in English, Neander's dale. So a name that means nothing more dramatic than a dip in the ground is sitting inside one of the most recognized words in palaeontology, unrecognised because German spelled it differently.

Meaning

a valley

The ordinary English word, still current in the north where the landscape has a great many of them. It names a broad open valley rather than a narrow one, which is what separates it from the Gaelic word for the same feature.

Dayle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1946, with 100 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Dayle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable, entirely unambiguous in sound, and instantly said.
  • The meaning is concrete and pleasant and needs no explaining.
  • The spelling reads as a name rather than as the bare noun.
What to consider
  • Dale is far commoner and this spelling gets corrected constantly.
  • It leans to girls, but a real share of children with this spelling are boys, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
  • It is closely tied to the middle decades of the last century.
