Dawnette joins an ordinary English word to a French ending, in the mid-century American way, and nothing records who first made the join. There is also a false dawn, which is a real astronomical event with a name of its own and a practical consequence.

Where it comes from

Our story of Dawnette

Before the true dawn there is a false one. A faint triangular glow rises along the ecliptic an hour or more before sunrise, caused by sunlight scattering off dust in the plane of the solar system — the zodiacal light — and from a dark site it is bright enough to be mistaken for the beginning of morning. Arabic distinguishes the two: al-fajr al-kadhib, the lying dawn, and al-fajr al-sadiq, the true one, a distinction that matters because the first prayer of the day and the start of the Ramadan fast are timed to the true dawn and not to the false. The same glow appears after dusk in the west, where it is called the zodiacal light rather than a false anything, and light pollution has now put both out of reach of most people.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The front is the English word for daybreak, used as a name since the nineteen-twenties. The ending is a French diminutive suffix, borrowed as decoration rather than as a working part. Nothing documents an intention behind the combination.

Two syllables with the stress at the back, which is where the French ending puts it. Some families say DAWN-et instead, keeping the weight on the word.

Dawnette sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1971, with 54 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dawnette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Dawn comes off it at once and needs no explanation anywhere.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
What to consider
  • Dawnetta, Donnette and Dawnelle will all be written for it.
  • Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • The front is an ordinary word, which readers hear before they hear a name.
