Anthony Wayne, Mad Anthony to his troops, fought the length of the Revolution and afterwards won the campaign that opened the Ohio country; towns, counties and a fort in Indiana carry his surname, and that fort grew into a city. When a studio needed a new name for a young actor called Marion Morrison in 1930, a director reached for the general and produced John Wayne, and from that point the surname was a boy's name in its own right.
