Davida
Feminine · “beloved”

Davida is David with one letter added, and that letter does more than it looks. It makes the name a woman's, and it moves the stress: David leans on its first syllable, Davida on its second. One vowel changes the shape of the whole word.

The story of Davida
David is the most frequently named person in the Hebrew Bible, appearing something over a thousand times, and no other name in that book comes close. That density is a good part of why the name survived everywhere Jews, Christians and Muslims went, and why almost every European language has a form of it. Making a woman's name from it is the oldest trick in Latin: add an a. Rome did it constantly, turning Julius into Julia, Claudius into Claudia, and English-speaking families applied the same rule to David long after Latin had stopped being spoken, producing Davida, Davina and Davena.

beloved
The traditional reading is beloved, from a Hebrew root, but the name is old enough that its origin is genuinely argued over and other readings have been proposed. Davida inherits the argument along with the name.

Fashion outlook
Davida sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is built on one of the most recognizable names in the world, so nobody has to be taught what it is.
- The Latin method behind it is transparent, which makes the name easy to explain in a sentence.
- Vida and Dee are ready short forms with nothing in common but the name they come from.
- The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls in the United States, so it does not settle which child is meant.
- Davina is the commoner feminine in Britain and will often be offered instead.
- The stress is genuinely unsettled, so a Davida will be introduced two different ways.
