Where it comes from

Our story of Darrion

The -ion ending is the interesting part. From the nineteen-eighties American families began adding it to short names to give them length and a formal finish: Darren to Darrion, Demar to Demarion, Jamar to Jamarion. The result was a set of names that sound Latinate without coming from Latin. Darrion is one of the most successful of them. Its parts are all borrowed and its whole is entirely new, which is the ordinary way American names have been made for a century.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Nothing settled. Darius, the Persian royal name meaning roughly he who holds firm the good, is often given as the source, but the American Darrion sits closer to Darren, whose own origin is obscure, with an -ion ending added. The link to Darius cannot be shown.

Pronouncing Darrion

DAR-ee-un

Three syllables, stress in front. Some families say duh-REE-un with the weight in the middle; both are heard and the spelling does not choose.

Darrion sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1994, with 220 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Darrion went to 21 boys in 2025, but Darion is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 61, which makes it the 867th most-given boys’ name of the year — 3,840 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 28,001 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 81,337 for Darrion itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
