Darrell has two doubled consonants and only one of them is doing anything. The rr keeps the first vowel short, which is a real job; the ll at the end guards nothing, because the vowel before it is already reduced to nothing and cannot be made shorter.

Where it comes from

The story of Darrell

One Darrell left England a ghost story that has outlasted his family. Wild Will Darrell of Littlecote in Wiltshire was the subject of a persistent local account, recorded within living memory of the events, in which a midwife was fetched blindfolded to a great house at night, delivered a child, and watched a man throw it on the fire; she cut a piece from the bed hangings and counted the stairs on the way out, and identified the house afterwards. There was a trial. Darrell was acquitted, under circumstances that were talked about, and died a few years later when his horse threw him at a spot still called Darrell's Stile. The house is real, the court records exist, and the story has been told for four hundred years.

Meaning

From Airelle

A Norman surname taken from a place in Calvados, with the French preposition fused onto the front, in the same way that Darcy and Devereux were formed. The place name's own meaning is not securely known. Nothing in the name describes a person; it records a journey somebody made once.

How the name formed

  3. Darrell

Pronouncing Darrell

DARE-ul

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second is reduced almost to nothing, which is why the record holds Darrell, Darryl, Daryl and Darrel and all four are said the same way.

Darrell is past its biggest year. The count topped out at 4,647 boys in 1959 and has eased 98% since — the slow half of a naming cycle, where a name stays familiar while getting steadily less common. The move since 2022: down 23.6%.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

#683
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Darrell went to 97 boys in 2025, but Darell, Darel and Darrel are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 253, which makes it the 683rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,005 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 6,751 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 17,609 for Darrell itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spoken name is completely established and never needs repeating.
  • Dare and Dell are two short forms with nothing in common.
  • It has a real, locatable Norman history behind it.
What to consider
  • At least four spellings circulate together and this is one of them.
  • The record carries it for girls in small numbers as well.
  • It is strongly dated to the middle of the last century in American ears.
