Dara Shikoh was the eldest son of Shah Jahan, the emperor who built the Taj Mahal, and he spent his learning on bridges: he oversaw the translation of fifty Upanishads into Persian so that readers of that language could meet the Hindu scriptures, and wrote a book on what Sufism and Vedanta share. He lost the war of succession to his brother Aurangzeb and was executed. Darra doubles the r of his name, and of the Irish and biblical Daras too, and keeps them all in two easy syllables.
