Scotland tried to found a colony in Darién and it cost the country its independence. A quarter of the nation's liquid capital went into an expedition to the Panamanian isthmus in the sixteen-nineties; the site was malarial, the Spanish were hostile, England refused to help, and almost everyone who sailed died.

Where it comes from

The story of Darien

The most famous line about it contains a mistake nobody has ever wanted to fix. A young poet, up all night reading a translation of Homer, wrote a sonnet comparing the experience to an explorer's first sight of the Pacific, and put Cortez on a peak in Darién staring at the ocean. It was Balboa. Cortez was in Mexico. The error has been pointed out continuously since the poem was published and the line is still quoted exactly as written, because it is a better line than the corrected version would be, which is an uncomfortable thing for accuracy to have to concede.

Darien sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1995, with 175 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Darien sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It names a real and consequential place rather than an invented one.
  • The rhythm is even and the spelling gives no trouble.
  • It is distinctive without containing a difficult sound.
What to consider
  • Darian, Darion and Darrien all appear and the spelling gets queried.
  • The place it names is currently best known as a dangerous crossing.
  • The record holds girls as well, and the girl is the smaller side.
