Our story of Danton
Georges Danton was the thundering voice of the early French Revolution, and then its victim. Condemned by Robespierre's tribunal, he went to the guillotine telling the executioner to show his head to the people, since it was worth seeing. Four decades later the young German writer Georg Büchner, hiding from the police for his own political writing, wrote the play Danton's Death at twenty-one, and it is still performed. Danton as a first name carries that surname, bold and dramatic, onto an American child.
