There are two doubled consonants in this name and they are both doing the same job. The doubled n closes the first syllable and keeps its vowel short; the doubled t closes the second and does likewise. Neither is decorative, and between them they hold the whole word in place.

Where it comes from

The story of Dannette

The book the stem name belongs to does something no other book in the Bible does: it changes language halfway through. It opens in Hebrew, switches into Aramaic in the middle of a sentence when a group of courtiers begin to speak, stays in Aramaic for six chapters, and then switches back to Hebrew for the rest. Nobody has satisfactorily explained why. The change is not marked, not commented on, and does not line up neatly with a change of subject or of source. It is one of the oddest features of the entire collection, sitting in plain sight in a book everybody knows for a story about lions.

Meaning

God is my judge, in a small form

The stem is the Hebrew name and its sense is not in dispute: it is a full statement rather than a description. The French ending adds smallness and affection and no meaning of its own.

Fashion outlook

Dannette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The stress at the back gives it a decisive finish.
  • Dani sits inside it as a completely current short form.
  • The doubled letters are doing real phonic work rather than decorating.
What to consider
  • Danette and Danetta both exist and the spelling gets queried.
  • It is closely tied to the middle decades of the last century.
  • The diminutive ending means the name is literally a small version of another.
