Our story of Dann
Explaining a nation by inventing an ancestor is a standard medieval move and it produced a whole genre. The Danish chronicler gave the country a founder called Dan; the British were given Brutus of Troy, from whom Britain supposedly got its name; the Franks were given a Trojan too. In every case the name came first and the ancestor was reverse-engineered from it, sometimes centuries later, by writers who needed a beginning and had no material. Historians call the type an eponymous founder and treat the whole class as evidence about the writers rather than the past. What the country's name actually means is disputed, with readings involving flat land and forest boundaries both in circulation.

Two unrelated sources and no way to choose. The Hebrew Dan is a verb meaning he judged and the name of a tribe; the Scandinavian Dan is a legendary figure and an element in Danmark and Dane. As an American given name it is likelier a clipping of Daniel or Danielle, and the record does not say.
Pronouncing Dann
DAN
One syllable, said exactly as the ordinary spelling. The doubled n changes nothing, since the vowel before it is already short and English does not otherwise end words this way.

Fashion outlook
Dann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, plain and impossible to mispronounce.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- The extra letter distinguishes the written form without complicating the spoken one.
- The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
- The doubled n is unusual at the end of an English word and looks like an error.
- It is a clipping and leaves nothing more formal on the certificate.
