Danice puts a French-looking ending on a man's short form, which is a combination neither language would produce. The nationality the front syllable suggests has a small demonstration of its own about how names attach to things.

Where it comes from

Our story of Danice

The pastry English speakers call Danish is called Viennese bread in Denmark, and the Danes are right. Austrian bakers were brought in during a bakers' strike in Copenhagen in the eighteen-fifties and brought their laminated dough with them; Danish bakers learned it, changed it — more egg, more butter, more filling — and then exported the result under their own flag when they emigrated. So the pastry is a Danish improvement on an Austrian technique, marketed abroad as Danish and known at home as Austrian. The same pattern turns up constantly: the French call a thing English and the English call it French, and both are describing where they think it came from rather than where it did. Food names and personal names both work this way, which is why a name that looks French is so often not.

The front is a clipping of Daniel or Danielle, carrying a documented Hebrew meaning at a distance. The ending is borrowed from French names like Clarice and Bernice and carries nothing here. Nothing records what the family meant by joining them.

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The ending says eece rather than iss, following the French names it was borrowed from rather than English words like notice.

Danice sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1954, with 27 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Danice sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • Dani detaches cleanly and works for a child of any age.
  • It is uncommon while being built entirely from familiar pieces.
What to consider
  • Denise and Danisa will both be written for it.
  • The ending has two possible readings in English, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • Only the front half carries a meaning, and it carries it at a distance.
