Where it comes from

Our story of Danessa

English borrowed a feminine ending from French in the Middle Ages and applied it to job titles for six hundred years: an actress, a waitress, a seamstress, a poetess, an authoress, a sculptress, a manageress. Then it started taking them off again. Poetess and authoress went first, because writers objected to them loudest and because the implication — that a woman doing the work is doing a different job — is hardest to defend in a field that is only words. Sculptress and manageress followed. Actress survives, unevenly, and is contested within the profession itself; waitress survives in ordinary speech while the trade has largely moved to server. The interesting part is that English never had a feminine ending of its own and has now spent two generations returning a borrowed one, leaving a handful of fossils and a great many names that carry the sound without the sense.

The front is a clipping of Daniel or Danielle, which carries a documented Hebrew meaning at a distance. The ending came off a name invented for a poem in the eighteenth century and carries nothing. What the family intended by joining them is not recorded.

Fashion outlook

Danessa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Nessa detaches cleanly and is a complete name.
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the most comfortable rhythm English offers.
  • The spelling is phonetic and can be written from hearing.
What to consider
  • Denessa, Danisa and Vanessa will all be written for it at various times.
  • The ending dates the name to a particular stretch of American fashion.
  • Only the front half carries a meaning, and it carries it at a distance.
