The story of Dandrea
Two things about the Andrew family are odd enough to be worth knowing. The first is that two of the apostles have Greek names — Andrew and Philip — in a group of Galilean fishermen whose other names are all Hebrew or Aramaic, and no source explains it. Greek was the trading language of the region and a Greek name in a Jewish family was not impossible, but the Gospels never remark on it. The second is more recent and very American: an Italian liner called the Andrea Doria was struck in fog off Nantucket and went down over eleven hours, with almost everyone aboard taken off in one of the most successful rescues at sea ever managed. The name was in every newspaper in the country for a week, in exactly the years this one begins to appear.

Of Andrea — or a prefixed form of the same name
D'Andrea is a common Italian surname: the d' means of, and the name is a patronymic. The same letters can equally be an American build, a prefix attached to a name that was current. The name at the center is the same either way, and it is built on the Greek word for a man.

Fashion outlook
Dandrea sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It contains a complete and very old name that can be used on its own.
- The rhythm is strong and the name is easy to say once seen.
- It works as an Italian family name and as an American coinage at the same time.
- It will be written as D'Andrea, DeAndrea and Deandra by people working from sound.
- Most children with this spelling are girls, but a real minority are boys; either may be taken for the other.
- In Italian the name at its center belongs to men, which occasionally causes a double take.
