Damone belongs to a set of American men's names built to sound French by putting an e on the end: Tyrone, Jerome, Antoine, Damone. None of them is French, and the device works anyway, because the e moves the weight of the name onto its last syllable, which is what French names do and English ones do not.

Where it comes from

The story of Damone

The Greek daimon that gives English demon meant something closer to a guiding spirit or an allotted fate, and Socrates famously claimed to have one that warned him off actions but never told him what to do. Christian writers narrowed it to something wicked, and by the time English borrowed it there was nothing left of the older sense. Damon is from a separate verb about taming animals and by extension about mastering anything difficult; it was an ordinary Greek man's name, carried in a well-known story about two friends and a death sentence, and it reached English through the classical revival. Adding a final e to it is a twentieth-century American move and changes only where the voice lands.

To tame, to subdue

If the name is Damon, the Greek verb behind it means to tame or to overcome, and it is the root of the word indomitable. It has nothing to do with the word demon, which comes from a different Greek word entirely and originally meant a spirit of no particular character. The two look alike in English and are unrelated, which is worth saying because the assumption comes up.

Two syllables with the stress at the back, which is what the final e is there to signal. Read as Italian it would be three syllables, dah-MOH-neh, and that is the one language where the spelling is native.

Fashion outlook

Damone sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Final stress gives the name a clean, definite finish and makes it carry across a room.
  • The name behind it is genuinely ancient and attached to a well-known story about friendship.
  • It is unusual without being difficult; nobody has to be told twice how to say it.
What to consider
  • The similarity to an English word for an evil spirit is superficial but will be noticed.
  • Damon is far commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
  • The final e is silent in English, which makes the spelling hard to justify in speech.
