Where it comes from

The story of Damin

Greek damazein, to tame, has cousins all over Europe: Latin domare, which gave English indomitable, and the Germanic word that became English tame. Damon and Damian grew from the Greek side, and both have been carried by saints and by characters in literature. In the twentieth century the Damien spelling picked up a shadow when the film The Omen gave it to a child who turns out to be the Antichrist. Damin avoids that spelling while keeping the sound.

Fashion outlook

Damin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It sounds like a family of long-established names.
  • It is rare as a spelling, so it stands apart.
  • The root it shares with tame is old and documented.
What to consider
  • Strangers will split between DAY-min and DAM-in.
  • The whole family of names still reminds some people of The Omen.
