Damask is the figured, reversible fabric woven so that the pattern shows by the direction of the threads rather than by color, and Europe met it in trade through the city. A damson is a plum, from damascenum, the plum of Damascus, brought west by crusaders and grown in English hedges ever since. And damascened steel is the patterned blade metal — either the wootz steel imported from India and worked in the Levant, or the pattern-welded kind made by folding — which acquired the city's name in European usage even though most of it was not made there. The technique of inlaying gold into steel is also called damascening. One trading city, three industries, and only one of them is likely to have originated there.
