Where it comes from

Our story of Dajanae

Day and diary look like relatives and are not. Day is Germanic, from an Old English word with cousins all over the northern languages, and it has been in English as long as English has existed. Diary is Latin, from dies, a day, borrowed in the sixteenth century along with diurnal, journal, journey, adjourn and sojourn — all of which are day-words in disguise, because a journey was originally a day's travel and a journal was a day-book. The Latin and Germanic words are not related at all; linguists checked, and the sound correspondences do not work. It is one of the better-known false cognates, and it is a useful thing to keep in mind about names as well: two things that look like they must share a parent frequently do not, and resemblance is not evidence.

No source is documented. The prefix is a free American element; the base is itself a build on a man's name with a free ending. Nothing records what a family meant by either join, and the compound has no etymology.

Pronouncing Dajanae

day-juh-NAY

Three syllables with the stress at the back. Both the front and the ending carry a long a, which is what gives the name its bounce.

Fashion outlook

Dajanae sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a three-syllable name a firm landing.
  • Janae detaches cleanly and is a complete name.
  • The spelling is phonetic and can be written from hearing.
What to consider
  • Dajanay, Dejanae and Dajanea are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The name is firmly dated to the decades it was made in.
  • Neither join carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
