In Zoroastrian teaching, the soul of the dead comes on the fourth day to the Chinvat Bridge, and there it meets its daena, its own conscience in the shape of a woman: a beautiful girl for a soul that lived well, a hag for one that did not, and the bridge widens or narrows accordingly. The word also means 'religion', and it survives in Middle Persian as den. In the United States Daena appears in the middle of the twentieth century beside Dana and Deanna, and nothing in the record shows any family taking it from the Avestan.
