Dacia

The story of Dacia
Trajan conquered the province in the second century, celebrated it with a column in Rome that is still standing and still the best pictorial record of a Roman army anywhere, and settled it heavily enough that the local language was replaced by Latin. That is why Romanian is a Romance language surrounded by Slavic ones. The place name survived in books rather than in speech, and a name taken from it is taken from history rather than from any living tradition. In America the -ia ending reads as a woman's name, which is why the record has it as one.
Meaning
of Dacia
A place name used as a personal name. What Dacia itself meant is not recoverable — it is older than any language that could explain it, and the usual proposals are guesses.
Pronouncing Dacia
DAY-shuh
Two syllables with the weight at the front. Italian and Romanian give it three, DAH-chee-ah, with a ch in the middle.

Fashion outlook
Dacia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, spelled as it sounds in English and read correctly at sight.
- The place behind it is real, documented and unusually well illustrated.
- It is genuinely uncommon while being entirely legible.
- A Romanian car marque carries the name and is the first association in much of Europe.
- English and Romanian say it quite differently, which matters in bilingual families.
- It reads as a place name rather than a personal one to anyone who knows the history.
