The y in Cyndi is the only Greek thing left in it. Everything else has been cut away or respelt, but that one letter is an upsilon, the vowel Greek used and Latin borrowed, and it is doing the work of marking a name that no longer looks like its parent at all.

Where it comes from

The story of Cyndi

The goddess in question had a different name in every poem. Greek called her Artemis and also Cynthia, after the mountain, and Phoebe, after her grandmother, and Selene when the moon itself was meant; Rome called her Diana and Luna and kept Cynthia as a poetic alternative. English poets used all of them more or less interchangeably for centuries, so that Cynthia was for a long time simply a literary word for the moon rather than a name for a person. It became a name properly in the modern period, produced the short form Cindy, and then the short form went its own way — respelt with the Greek letter that the long name had, and given to children who never had the long name at all.

Meaning

The full name refers to a place, and through the place to a goddess born there. The short form carries the reference without carrying anything that shows it.

Fashion outlook

Cyndi sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
  • The y gives it a visual identity that the plain spelling does not have.
  • Five letters and two syllables, with a ready one-syllable short form.
What to consider
  • Cindy is the standard spelling and will be written instead on almost every form.
  • It reads as a short form, and formal settings will look for the Cynthia that may not exist.
  • The bare i ending dates the name precisely to the middle of the twentieth century.
