Where it comes from

The story of Cynda

Cynthia was a Greek epithet of Artemis, and Roman poets used it as a name for the women they wrote to. The Augustan poet Propertius opened his first book of elegies with it: the very first word is Cynthia, the woman who, he says, caught him first with her eyes. English took Cynthia up as a given name from the Renaissance on, and twentieth-century American families shortened it to Cindy, Cinda and Cynda. The y is the telling letter: Cinda can come from Lucinda as easily as from Cynthia, but Cynda keeps the Greek spelling and points in only one direction.

Meaning

A short form of Cynthia, 'of Mount Kynthos'

Cynthia was a title of the goddess Artemis, born on Mount Kynthos on Delos. The y in Cynda points back to Cynthia rather than to Lucinda.
